Xinyu municipality was founded for its steel production which has always been the backbone industry of the city together with correlative industries contributing a lot to the economic and social developments of the city. Xinyu Steel Corporation is the biggest ferroalloy production base all over the country. After many years of product structure adjustment, plate is becoming the new feature advantage of the corporation. Now Xinyu Steel Corp. is making all its way to construct an elaborate national plate base.
Xinyu has a long history of smelting. The gun-metal cymbals and tripod of Shang Dynasty unearthed from Luofang and Shuixi show us clearly that people in Xinyu has mastered smelting technology since Shang Dynasty. When it came to Tang Dynasty, the mining and smelting industry reached a very high level in Xinyu. It’s said that “There is iron in Huze of Fenyi” in Tang History·Geography. Archaeology discoveries show that the scale of smelting site in Phoenix Mount of Tang Dynasty was very large. During Yong-Xi period (984—987) in Northern Song Dynasty, former Chinese Empire. set up special administration—Guishan Iron Department in Guishan, Fenyi. The smelting industry of Xinyu is the most prosperous in Ming Dynasty since the settling two of the 13 national iron departments separately in Xinyu and Fenyi.
The foundation of Xinyu Steel Corp. in 1958 started the development of modern smelting industry of Xinyu. After more than 40 years of constructions and developments, the corporation has already become a national large-scale iron and steel complex, and it ranked 138th among large-scale industrial companies of China in 2004, 220th among top 500 companies in China and 24th among steel companies around the country. Its steel output ran the 78th all over the world. With a total asset of 10.761 billion RMB, the original value of fixed assets is 7.05 billion RMB and the net assets is 4.846 billion RMB. It mainly producing wire, cut deal, deformed steel bar, hot rolled silicon steel sheet, round steel, seamless steel pipe, cold rolled steel strip, hot rolled steel sheet, forming 6 major product series—common steel、 special steel、 ferroalloy、 metal work、 heavy chemicals and carbon product. Its products are sold to USA, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and several other countries and regions.? Which have also been successfully used in Three Gorges Projects, Qinshan Nuclear Power Station, Run-Yang Great Bridge, Jing-Fu Expressways and all together tens of national and provincial major projects. In 2004, Xinyu Iron and Steel Corp. became the first single company with sale income of more than 10 billion RMB in Jiangxi. Nowadays, the third round technological transformation project is under construction, which ensures that it will be an elaborate national plate base in the near future.

Ancient Smelting Technology
People in Xinyu has mastered smelting technology since Shang Dynasty and started to make iron in Han Dynasty. The smelting scale was pretty large in Tang Dynasty. Guishan Iron Department in Fenyi was set up in Northern Song Dynasty and Mengshan Silver Department in Yuan Dynasty. Two of the 13 national iron departments were separately in Xinyu and Fenyi. The iron making part of Exploitation of Works of Nature written by Song Yingxing reflects the high level of smelting technology in Xinyu.

Modern Smelting Industry
As the backbone of modern smelting industry in Jiangxi, Xinyu Steel Corp. has achieved large scales in production, producing more than 4.1 million ton of iron, 4.5 million ton of steel and 4 million ton of semi finished steel per year through two rounds of technological transformation. In 2004, Xinyu Steel Corp. became the first single company to ingather more than 10 billion RMB as sale income in Jiangxi.

Future Outlooks
Nowadays, the third round technological transformation project is under construction, which ensures that Xinyu Steel Corp. will be an elaborate national plate base, a modernized high quality iron and steel complex and a first class company in Jiangxi.
